Ergonomic Military Seats: Ensuring the Mental and Physical Wellbeing of Troops
Here in 2020, everyone realizes why ergonomics is critical in seating. Good seats lower the risk of muscle fatigue and injury, and can also have somewhat surprising secondary effects like increasing productivity for those who spend long periods of time sitting.
These concerns are every bit as important – if not more so – when it comes to ergonomic military seats in a warzone scenario. Suddenly, having a quality seat isn’t just about staying alert in order to contribute to a company meeting or avoiding back pain that can keep an employee out of the office for days, like it might be in an office environment. It’s literally a life and death situation in which the continued health of troops, and their ability to be properly rested and ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice, is an absolute must.
Add to this the requirement of journeys travelling in military vehicles in some of the harshest environments known to humankind for many, many hours at a time, and a plethora of health risks that range from uneven terrain to the omnipresent risk of attacks such as those from improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Poorly designed seats can take a significant physical and emotional toll on their users, with the resulting discomfort and pain leading to unnecessarily high stress levels, distractions, and impaired performance and resilience levels when they are needed the most. Put simply: the world was (rightly) crying out for proper ergonomic seating solutions for military vehicles.

They will provide protection, support, and comfort for everyone from the most lightweight 5th percentile female to a heavyset 95th percentile male including but not limited to the Driver Seat, Gunner Seat, Crew Seat, and Troop Seat categories.
Each of these has been designed and engineered to fit the unique roles required of that crew member. For example, the Gunner Seat boasts a folding back and standing platform, allowing the gunner to raise themselves to the level of the gun turret in a vehicle. When designing these seats, we worked hard to balance the kind of adjustability required for “workplace” functionality (e.g. the folding back of the Gunner Seat) with adjustable features for the comfort of those travelling on board a particular vehicle. For instance, we know that the driver is more likely to spend longer than anyone else in a military vehicle. We therefore made sure to include features such as a reclining back and adjustable headrest to make the seats in this area as comfortable as possible. The ergonomic design of our seats allows for the effortless operation of on-board vehicle controls.
This kind of flexibility is often not well represented in military seating solutions, risking injuries in the process. Sitting awkwardly with bad posture in a seat that is the wrong height can be a major risk factor in the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). MSD can lead to swelling, pain, numbness, muscle fatigue, and decreased circulation. Giving troops the ability to easily adjust their seats to fit their size and requirements might sound minor, but it’s going to have major ramifications when it comes to the mental and physical wellbeing of troops who put their lives on the line.
